California Artwork

California 1/4 Goldback

The California ¼ Goldback features the virtue Justitia. In one hand, she raises the scales of justice. In the other, she rests a gavel atop a stack of books. California’s state flower and insect—poppies and California dogface butterflies—are woven throughout the scene. In the background, Half Dome and El Capitan place the scene in Yosemite National Park.

Under UV light, the artwork reveals water filling Justitia’s scales to illustrate the effort required to uphold liberty and justice. Along the bottom, the inscription reads “To delay justice is injustice.”

California 1 Goldback

The California 1 Goldback depicts the virtue Dilignetia, or diligence, as a female prospector. She kneels in the waters of Sutter’s Mill in Coloma, California, joyfully panning the river. In her hand, she holds a gold nugget, and under a UV light, more can be seen glimmering beneath the water. The scene captures the excitement of the historic 1848 discovery that ignited the California Gold Rush.

In the background, a grizzly bear—featured on California’s state flag—stands as a reminder of the frontier spirit that defines the Golden State. Along the bottom is the enduring principle: “Diligence is the mother of good luck.”

California 5 Goldback

The California 5 Goldback portrays Abundantia, the personification of abundance. She stands among the rolling vineyards of Sonoma Valley, California, holding clusters of ripe grapes. Beside her is the state bird, the California quail, while the UV layer reveals a ladybug as a symbol of good luck. The Mission San Francisco Solano stands in the distance, the last and northernmost of California’s twenty-one missions.

This design reminds us that true fortune is the prosperity that grows from patient cultivation. The enduring principle reads: “To plant a garden is to believe in tomorrow.”

Utah 1/4 Goldback

The Utah 1/4 Goldback portrays Justitia, the personification of justice. In her hands, she holds scales and a sword to represent fairness and the defense of truth. A blindfold covers her eyes to show impartiality. Inscribed on her belt is the word “Deseret,” the original name proposed for the Beehive State. The scene is set near Balanced Rock in Moab, Utah. Above, a bald eagle soars, while the UV layer reveals a rabbit clutched in its talons. Together, these elements reflect the relationship between fairness and authority. Inscribed along the bottom is the enduring principle: “Judge Righteously.”

Utah 1/2 Goldback

The Utah 1/2 Goldback illustrates the virtue Patientia, or endurance. She is depicted as a pioneer woman journeying through Emigration Canyon, the final passage for handcart companies entering the Salt Lake Valley in the mid 1800s. Flying above are western meadowlarks, serving as symbols of hope and guidance. In the foreground, sego lilies bloom as heralds of survival and peace. The UV layer reveals honeybees swarming the lilies, while angels appear beside the pioneers to guide their footsteps along the trail. Along the bottom, the enduring principle reads: “They shall walk and not faint” — Isaiah 40:31

Utah 1 Goldback

The refreshed Utah 1 Goldback honors the virtue Prudentia, or prudence, personified as a Ute woman wearing a traditional deerskin dress. The Ute people are the longest continuously living Indigenous inhabitants of present-day Utah. Prudentia sits upon Utah’s iconic red rocks beneath an open sky, near Delicate Arch. She gazes serenely ahead, reflecting the judgment and foresight shown by both those who navigate the land with respect and care. Beside her rests a mountain lion, while a bristlecone pine—carried over from the original Utah 1 design—stands firm behind her. In the UV layer, a hidden wolf howls under the glow of the moon. The enduring principle reads: “Wisdom gives life to those who have it.”

Utah 2 Goldback

The Utah 2 Goldback illustrates the virtue Gratia, or grace, through a pioneer woman experiencing profound gratitude during the 1848 Miracle of the Gulls. During this extraordinary event, flocks of California gulls saved the settlers from a devastating cricket infestation. Gratia reflects the humility and thankfulness that grew from this experience, reminding us to recognize blessings even in moments of crisis. Inscribed along the bottom is the enduring principle: “The Lord will provide.” – Genesis 22:14

Utah 5 Goldback

The refreshed Utah 5 Goldback embodies the virtue Devotionis, or devotion. She represents the unwavering faith of pioneer settlers in the mid to late 1800s. Rising in the background is the Salt Lake City Temple, a historic landmark that is a testament to the pioneer’s commitment and hard work. Devotionis holds a Bible and a basket filled with early crops harvested in the valley. Behind her grows a native cottonwood tree, its trunk carved with the word “Deseret” in the Deseret alphabet. Under a UV light, the inscription’s English translation is revealed.

A beehive hangs from branches of the cottonwood tree, a symbol of industry that has become deeply associated with Utah’s identity. Honeybees circle Devotionis and UV-reactive ink reveals a honeybee necklace resting against her chest. The scene reflects the settlers’ faith-driven labor that shaped Utah’s identity. The enduring principle reads: “Out of small things proceedeth that which is great.” — D&C 64:33

Utah 10 Goldback

The refreshed Utah 10 Goldback pays tribute to the virtue Aeternitas, or eternity, illustrated through the 1991 discovery of the Utahraptor near Moab. The Utahraptor is one of Utah’s most celebrated prehistoric discoveries. Aeternitas represents the endless passage of time and the enduring story of creation. Inscribed on her cuff are the Alpha and Omega symbols as sand slips through her fingers, symbolizing time’s constant flow. An hourglass stands in the forefront to remind us that every age eventually gives way to another.

Overhead, a falcon soars while the UV artwork reveals pterodactyls flying through the ancient sky and a living Utahraptor in the distance. In the foreground, a blooming yucca plant thrives in the harsh desert. Together, these symbols highlight the deep passage of time and remind us that while civilizations rise and fall, the story of the earth continues. Written along the bottom is the enduring principle: “Life is eternal.”

Utah 25 Goldback

The refreshed Utah 25 Goldback features Disciplina, the virtue of discipline. She is depicted as a seasoned snowboarder catching air in Park City, Utah—host of the 2002 Winter Olympics. Her jacket is embroidered with the Olympic torch, and the bottom of her board proudly displays the Utah beehive. Hidden UV artwork reveals a snowy owl soaring beneath her, and a yeti treading through deep snow along the tree line.

Disciplina demonstrates the commitment, structure, and persistence required of athletes who push themselves to reach peak performance. Inscribed is the enduring principle: “Press toward the mark.” — Philippians 3:14

Utah 50 Goldback

The refreshed Utah 50 Goldback celebrates our capstone virtue Libertas, or liberty, through the historic Golden Spike Ceremony held on May 10, 1869 at Promontory Summit. On this day, the nation’s first transcontinental railroad was completed, forever transforming the nation. Libertas drives the final blow to the legendary golden spike, her belt adorned with the Utah state seal. The UV layer uncovers a band with the state flag around her left arm and a California gull flying above. Behind her, a steam locomotive resembles the historic Jupiter train.

This pivotal moment demonstrated the very essence of liberty—opening the land, uniting people, and expanding freedom across the continent. Written across the bottom is the enduring principle: “Proclaim liberty throughout all the land.” — Leviticus 25:10
